"You have changed my life so much for the better"

I have had a long standing issue with alcohol which escalated after my marriage broke down. I had also been in a coercive controlling relationship and was using alcohol to block out the loneliness of the rejection I was subjected to as part of the controlling behaviour.

I was forced to leave the family home and was deemed unfit to look after the children, who stayed in the family home with my ex husband, which I know was the best decision for them. I then got charged for drink driving and lost my licence and also lost contact with my family who did not want to see me because of my drinking  and also my friend network.

I became isolated and began drinking to excess alone and using it to numb the pain of all my loss. I also put myself in various vulnerable situations which I would never dream of doing sober. My drinking escalated as well as my debts and I continued to avoid facing up to the reality of life. I also contemplated suicide and the only protective factors were my children and job. Everything became apparent to others when I was absent from work without any explanation and also attended work under the influence.

I knew then I had to face up to the reality that I had a problem. I self referred myself to CGL who are amazingly supportive and assisted me in starting on  my road to recovery . After a period of waiting which is the natural course of the process I was lucky enough to be accepted for a detox placement at the Dame Carol Detox centre. I was initially apprehensive as it was my first detox. However the environment, staff and fellow people in detox were all so supportive. They have an extensive structured  programme  timetable of groups and activities which help you understand your addiction and also to think about the coping strategies for when you return into the community.

The staff are absolutely brilliant and very approachable and demonstrate empathy and understanding about your situation. They all treat you with respect and dignity and you don't feel like you should be ashamed of your addiction. The food is superb!

This is my first detox and I am determined it will be my last but there is definitely beyond doubt I would not have achieved my sobriety without the support and help of the brilliant service. Thank you to you all . You have changed my life so much for the better and I can't wait to live a life of happiness and sobriety.
