"Traumatizing experience to go through"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Gynaecology Victoria Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I was referred by my GP for this service and unfortunately there was no contact further than a text message confirming appointment time.

When I arrived at Queen Margaret hospital I was asked if I had taken painkillers already (as per consultation and guide video I should have had) but I was unaware I should have.

I was told it would feel like pressure and some discomfort, some women say some pain... This was massively optimistic... During the procedure I was told it's ok to scream.

It clearly felt like everyone apart from me was aware that this had potential to be exceptionally painful. It was the worst pain I've ever experienced in my life. I shook. I cried. I tried so hard to stay still despite the pain.

Afterwards I lost all my colour, blood pressure dropped, ears started ringing and I had to sit in another room for a further half hour and recover.

Nurses were very supportive throughout and asked if someone was picking me up (I had drove myself there). Had I known that a percentage of women report this to be horrendously painful I would not have put myself in this position.

I felt vastly underinformed on what to expect. What I was told about it was hugely understated. Still in pain weeks later and now going through removal. I was booked as emergency at Victoria hospital due to the 3.5 week long pain flaring up worse over the weekend at work and have finally had it removed now. Traumatizing experience to go through.

I'd like to be clear that the staff were very friendly and helpful at both places however the lack of disclosure that some women describe it as worse than childbirth and the worst pain of their lives bothers me.

I've had tattoos, piercings (some of the most painful ones in existence might I add), laser tattoo removal, motorcycle accidents and had a car spring explode with my hands inside it. Having the coil inserted was far more painful than any of those.

Sadly NHS offer little to no pain relief or numbing.
