"I feel that there was no aftercare input post-sepsis"

About: Cameron Hospital / Recovery & rehabilitation Victoria Hospital / Medical High Dependency Victoria Hospital / Radiology

(as a service user),

In 2020 i developed intra abdominal sepsis and then bilateral pneumonia . I was diagnosed in the VHK MHDU and received the necessary treatment there for nearly 2 weeks. I was not expected to survive this hence my daughter was called (she and her family live abroad) and it was suggested that if she wanted to say goodbye it would have to be asap. They flew for 8hrs with their 7 wk old baby to see me. Covid had just broke shortly after my admission. I obviously did survive thankfully, but only due to the dedication of the HCA's, nursing staff, radiology dept, doctors and consultants. I then spent a few days in a ward before being transferred to Cameron Hospital for rehab.

I suffered horrendous hallucinations, fatigue, confusion and i could not even walk. From reading my medical notes all of the staff were very patient and supportive. Thank you. However, on reflection, i do not feel this was an appropriate place for me to be as it is (i think) a ward for over 65's, but i guess it was the only place to put me.

I was discharged home 4 wks later with ICASS OT & PT follow up.

My first question is : why is there no appropriate place for people like me to recover?

Secondly: i felt, and still do feel that there was no aftercare input apart from my GP.

Thirdly: i am still experiencing confusion, fatigue, mood swings, balance issues and feel there is no ongoing support in the community.

Lastly, you will be relived to hear: yes, there are lots of posters, signs on ambulances etc regarding what to do if you think someone could be suffering from sepsis but no information (that i have seen) about the ongoing issues you may have post sepsis and how to access help and for what those close to you may have to deal with in every day life.

Are medical staff trained in post sepsis issues? Whilst the care i received was exceptional and i will be forever grateful for that, i feel we need to look at the bigger picture.

For years i felt i was going mad most days, however, upon finding Sepsis awareness/support groups recently online i am definitely not going mad, and i am definitely not alone.

Thank you for taking the time to read this jumbled up message.

Dear Gillian572,

Thank you for taking the time to post this feedback, my name is Kim Macpherson, Lead Nurse, and I cover some of the inpatient wards at Cameron Hospital. I am glad that your treatment as an inpatient was good but sorry to read that you did not feel that Cameron was an appropriate place for you or that there was little after care to support you. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further with you. Please contact me by email at kim.macpherson@nhs.scot.

I hope that you are now well after a very difficult time for you and your family.

Kim
