"Post natal care"

About: Yeovil District Hospital / Hospital Maternity Care

(as the patient),

I was discharged from community midwives but tore my stitches after a third degree tear. My doctor spoke to my previous community midwife, who phoned and said to go to Yeovil hospital and the ward name and someone would see me.

I went when told, waited with my 6-week-old baby for over 2 hours, to then be told - this service is for brand new mothers, not mothers with 6-week-old babies, I shouldn’t be there, my stitches are probably fine, and it’s unlikely they’d be torn.

I cried and was sent home in tears, no apology, nobody checked if I was ok. Just had to pay an expensive parking ticket and try to work out feed times with my newborn for nothing!

I will never go to Yeovil maternity department again in future, if I’m lucky enough to have another baby.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us. It sounds like this was very distressing and frustrating for you. You absolutely did the right thing to go to your GP as you had been discharged from midwifery care. As far as we are aware, a GP would assess you and refer you to the appropriate service. However, I can also see that our communication and processes have not been followed by the community midwife and the hospital, so I am going to ensure that our community teams are aware of the correct referral processes should a GP contact us again. It would be useful to know, where in the hospital you came as you shouldn’t have waited so long to be told it was the wrong place. I can imagine that was really uncomfortable for you and I am very sorry this was your experience of Yeovil Maternity Department.
