I received a referral for an MRI scan which results will aid in surgical planning. I attended my MRI scan first thing in the morning at Glasgow Royal. I arrived to a quite small waiting area with maybe 6/7 seats. As it is in the basement of the hospital there are no windows so it feels quite dull.
I was invited to fill out a questionnaire in the reception and, after maybe 10 minutes I was taken through by a radiographer to go through this questionnaire and the procedure was explained in full to me.
I was then offered a locker to put my things into while I was in the scan and then was swiftly taken through to get a venflon put in my arm. I was asked what sort of music I wanted for the scan as it would be up to 45minutes long and was given a buzzer to press if I needed to speak to someone/wanted out.
It was clear that I was in control of the scan and if I didn’t want it I could say so. The scan itself was noisy & warm. I did feel quite claustrophobic however hearing reminders of how long each scan was going to be definitely helped me focus on something other than how small it felt.
I was extremely apprehensive about this scan & got upset before going in, however the Radiographers (Lindsay & Vicki) were amazing at all steps of the scan!! They were so understanding and caring. Tricia helped to get me out the scanner then removed my cannula afterwards. She was great at keeping my mind off the situation by asking about my plans for the day.
I cannot commend all of the staff enough. A scan is a really stressful thing to go through as it is a total unknown for a lot of people. So to have such kind & supportive staff when you’re there, it makes it a much more positive experience!
