"Kind and helpful staff, ineffective enemas"

About: Cancer Services / Radiotherapy

(as the patient),

Pre-treatment scan - had to have 5 times including 2 in one day until they were happy with the result - because of gas! I could not get my insides to sit still! I was given treatment to lose the gas and then was told that everything inside was absolutely perfect.

I take buscopan and laxido which my own doctor prescribed and am drinking gallons of water to help solve the problem.

One thing I would say though is that the enemas are too weak - they do not work for me. The laxido was the thing that made a difference for me. They don’t seem to have any answers to my wind problem. I had to go to my own GP for this.

I had blood tests last September and was diagnosed with cancer in October. I went through the pre-treatment for surgery and was told that they would get in touch within 2 weeks with a date for my surgery. So, after these two weeks I started phoning but nobody would take my call. It took a month before somebody actually told me what had happened, i.e. the surgeon had left the NHS to go to the private sector.

Once this information was made known I was transferred from surgery to radiotherapy. My treatment here seems to be going well although the enemas are still useless. However I realise this is probably me because they seem to work fine for other folk.

Staff are all fantastic - nothing is too much trouble. Everybody is very nice and helpful. Treatment is going well and I feel fine.

Dear KinrossKavy1, thankyou so much for taking the time to feedback your comments and your experiences. My name is Damian, head of therapeutic radiography, it is great to hear that you have found the staff fantastic and helpful in radiotherapy and I ensure I pass these lovely comments on to the staff groups as it will be very much appreciated.

I am sorry to hear of the experiences with the enemas and you are right they work fine for some people and not so well for others, who like yourself require a different intervention. It is a fine balance when using interventions like enemas with radiotherapy as we know we may cause some bowel discomfort as treatment continues so don't want to use an intervention that may compound this. That being said it is also important we find the right intervention for each patient as it is important for the planning of your radiotherapy and sometimes that can take a little more time than we would hope for, we thankyou for your patience with this and working with us to find the right think for you.

I am glad that your treatment is now going well and that you are feeling fine, we wish you well for the rest of your treatment and future.

Kind regards

Damian
