"Lovely doctors- need better access"

About: Sloan Medical Centre

The doctors are lovely and take time to listen. Getting an appointment is hard for autistic people. The form is great- but then you have an unexpected phone call at some point in the day which is really hard for autistic people. A text alternative would be far more accessible- or a link to choose an appointment via internet. Also- reception staff don’t have a good understanding of what autistic people need. I told the receptionist that my teenager was autistic so couldn’t manage the busy waiting room. We stood by the doors instead. I missed the appointment because I didn’t hear the doctor call-even though I was very close to reception the whole time. Reception didn’t tell me I missed it- it was only when we had been waiting 20 minutes and I went and ask how long it would be. It was another 40 minutes to wait which was awfully stressful and the receptionist was not understanding at all. On another occasion, I asked how many people before me ( I struggle to hear the doctors call my name and struggle with waiting unless I have some idea of how long). The receptionist looked at me and said ‘I don’t know- why do you need to know?’ I nearly missed my appointment again because I couldn’t hear the doctor call over the music and noise. The doctors themselves have been really very good- but access is a problem
