"Absolutely fantastic and a great service"

About: Children & Young People’s Occupational Therapy / Dundee - Children & Young People’s Occupational Therapy

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was offered Bike riding lessons through Occupational Therapy Dundee, which was absolutely fantastic and a great service.

My son who has SPD had massive challenges in learning to ride his bike because of coordinational issues and fears and emotions that come with SPD, I tried so hard with many different strategies but nothing was working and my son often came away deflated, frustrated and and very down and hard on himself, this affected his self worth so much it broke my heart, our lovely OT Fiona put us on the list for bike riding learning sessions with Grieg.

I couldn't believe we were offered such a truly wonderful service, and within 2 lessons my son was riding his bike, I almost cried, I cannot stress enough how wonderful this service was my son went in deflated, unconfident, apprehensive and not believing he could do it and after 2 sessions he was happy, confident little boy who was absolutely thrilled he could do it

This has had a massive impact on his self worth and self esteem and helped him to believe in himself in the adversity of his challenged with SPD which has also reflected in other challenging areas and helped him adopt don't give up attitude and with confidence anything is possible and what better gift could you give to a child with ASN needs.

I am so grateful for this service provided by the NHS its truly changed my little boys life and outlook on challenges, grieg was kind, patient and the best instructor anyone could ever ask for, he was positive determined with a we will do this together attitude which was intoxicating and the reason my son now has confidence.

Thank you so much NHS for this wonderful service and the wonderful people who run these services they are pure gold and you should be so proud of the staff from these departments they truly deserve medals for the support they provide to little lives and little minds.

Dear Mum100

Thank you for taking the time to post such a lovely story about your sons success in bike riding.

Such a wonderful start to our day to see this story which has been shared with the whole Occupational therapy department and leadership team.

It gives us all reassurance that what we are doing is making a difference in supporting children and young people to achieve independence in their occupations.

It was great to hear that both Fiona and Greg were able to help your son face this challenge and achieve it - Well Done!

Thanks again and happy cycling!

Aww it was absolutely our pleasure, these services are more important than you know and I will always give credit where credit is due, watching my son ride around happy and confident is honestly the biggest gift a mum could be given, we have been given wonderful support from your Dundee OT team and I'll forever be grateful to them, they are absolute credits to your service and I so hope they all get the recognition they so highly deserve ❤️

My son is a happy confident little boy and he will always have challenges with his SPD which is often overlooked and not supported in the way it should be and then people like Fiona, Kirsten and Greg come along and make you feel not so alone in those challenges so not only has my son been supported immensely but I have been too.

Keep up the fantastic work yous do and from the bottom of my heart it does matter and it is most certainly needed for the future and confidence of our little humans who are thriving because of services like these, you are making a difference so please believe that.

We wish you all well.

Kind regards
