My dad who has late stage Alzheimer's and severe heart failure was feeling unwell and was admitted to 4a at Whiston hospital.
Before he went into the ward we were asked if he could walk unaided. We said no, he needs help.
He went onto ward 4a. I had already registered my details as next of kin and having a POA for my dad.
I asked if there were any issues that I was contacted without hesitation.
My dad had a fall and split his head open on his 2nd day. I understand mistakes happen so I decided not to complain as the nurses seemed caring enough. I was a bit concerned that nobody had rang me. I arrived to find him with a gash on his head but then thought maybe they were going to call me afterwards so I let that go too.
Days later my dad was diagnosed with a gallbladder stone and infection/inflammation.
Afterwards I was told he had been refusing all of his medication and food but again nobody had notified me. I explained to his nurse that my contact details were in their notes and if it happens again to call me as my dad listens to me and would very likely take his meds etc if I asked him to.
I noticed his new antibiotic pills were too big and this was upsetting him.
I raised it with the ward manager over the telephone. I was told he would be discharged safely and that they would try to give him liquid meds instead.
They didn't.
My dad was discharged with pills that were too large so I went back to the ward and explained he had infection/inflammation and he needed his medication to be exchanged for liquids.
The nurse didn't seem to grasp that if he missed his meds he could end up back in hospital.
He had a wound on his head from the fall too and I felt with all his issues the antibiotics would be imperative.
I was told the nurse was in charge and there was no ward sister or manager available. They first told me the Dr finished their shift in 15 mins and would unlikely give a new prescription in time. I asked them to please ask, at which point they backtracked and told me there was no Drs available. I pointed out what they had already told me.
They appeared to be avoiding asking the Dr. They repeated that they would deal with it the following day.
I approached the pharmacy earlier and they had told me they would switch the pills for liquid if I brought a discharge note.
On my arrival they refused.
This had wasted more time.
My dad is now left without antibiotics over the weekend and while he has a wound on his head too. I believe this is sheer incompetence and I am now thinking that I should have been more concerned when my dad fell and they didn't call me immediately to let me know.
