"Bad advice from 999 services"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Ambulance Control Centre University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department University Hospital Wishaw / Paediatrics wards (19 & 20)

(as a parent/guardian),

After calling 999 for my son (2 year old) due to him having a seizure I was advised he would need an ambulance and they would send someone straight away. A few minutes into the call I was then told to hang up and someone would call me straight back, this took 23 minutes to get a call back. The person who called back then told me there was no ambulance being sent for my son and I’d be better off taking him to hospital myself. I was told to take him to Wishaw.

After arriving at Wishaw I was seen by a lovely nurse who advised me that the advice I had been given previously was wrong, there’s no way I should have been told to bring my son myself in the car as this not only put him in danger but also myself as driving while worrying about my child is dangerous. If anything further had happened to him on our journey this could have been life threatening for him. Also I was told to take him to Wishaw when I actually live a few minutes away from Hairmyres, therefore this would have been the safest option of places to take him to.

Luckily he received very good care after arriving at Wishaw but after the bad advice from the 2 phone calls I’d had before getting there this outcome could have been very different.

Dear Bi91,

Many thanks for taking the time to share your feedback here on CareOpinion. I am so sorry to read about what happened to your son, this must have been terrifying. I do hope that he is feeling better. I would like to offer the opportunity to review your feedback if possible but in order to do this we would need to know the date, time and address that the Ambulance was called from and your sons name. This information can be sent to sas.feedback@nhs.scot for the team to pick up. If you do decide to do this, would you be so kind as to make reference to your CareOpinion username so that the team can easily locate your story as I am about to finish for leave so won't be around for a couple of weeks.

I wish you and your son all the very best and thanks again for sharing your feedback.

Kind Regards

Alan

Dear Bi91

First of all, I am sorry to hear of how unwell your son became and required to attend the Emergency Department here at University Hospital Wishaw. I have no doubt this was a very worrying time for you and your family.

Thank you for your exceptionally kind words of encouragement about the care and treatment your son received. It will be my pleasure to ensure that the team are informed of your positive feedback which I am sure they will be delighted to hear.

Best wishes and I hope your sons health is improving

regards

Faith
