"Refusal of treatment"

About: Women, Children and Family Services / Sexual and Reproductive Health

(as a service user),

I attended FPC with the intention of having my coil replaced due to medical issues that occur after it being inserted for more than 3 years. I have had coils in and out for a long time now and I know my body. I also have other medical professionals confirming that I need the coil to be removed in a shorter period of time than most other people.

The doctor refused to change my coil for me. They made me feel like I was being belittled and said they would not take advice from any other professionals outside of their FPC team. I asked for the coil to be removed then, without a new coil being inserted and they also refused this as the mirena is effective for most people for 8 years.

I have been on antibiotics now for 4 months because of infections that are directly related to the coil! I am now going in for a procedure in a few days due to the coil and the damage it is causing to my body! Whatever happened to listening to your patients? Patients know their body better than a text book or a time frame giving by pharmaceutical companies!

Hi jupiterfw69,

Thank you for taking the time to post your review regarding your experience in one of our Sexual and Reproductive Health clinics. I am sorry that you felt your experience in our service was not to your satisfaction.

Within our SRH clinics we provide coils for contraceptive purposes and we follow National approved guidelines rather than pharmaceutical company advice regarding time frames for change of coils. This reduces exposure to risks involved such as perforation and infection. Sometimes coils are used for other indications or different change time frames are indicated but these are dealt with in a separate specialist part of our service which requires specialist referral. This advice is routinely given to all our patients requesting coil insertion or early replacement of coils.

If a specialist clinician feels you require a referral to our specialist clinic we are happy to accept this referral.

Thanks again for taking the time to feedback.

Amanda

Lead Nurse for SRH
