My father-in-law was recently admitted to AU2 overnight, he was admitted to SHDU where he stayed for 2 nights. I had some concerns about his stay in SHDU which I raised with the senior charge nurse who was compassionate, kind, and addressed my concerns immediately.
My father-in-law was then transferred to MHDU, where his care was nothing short of fantastic. When we went in to visit we were greeted by a nurse at the bedside called Rinku, she talked us through the procedure he had that morning and what they found and the plan from there. She was so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. She was kind, caring and compassionate and always worked with a smile.
A couple of days later we were given some devastating news about his condition by one of the doctors and a staff nurse named Eileen, they explained everything in detail and told us what to expect and what to do from here. Once again nothing was too much trouble for them and Eileen in particular went out of her way to make him comfortable.
His care was taken over from there by Dr Jafferbhoy, who is by far one of the best doctors I have ever experienced. To say he went above and beyond was no exaggeration, not only for my father-in-law but for us as well. He took time to speak to us and kept us in the loop with every improvement and decline in his condition. He took time to chat with my father-in-law, not only about his condition but just general chat, which was extremely comforting to him. I really don’t think any of us would have stayed sane if it wasn’t for him.
He was moved down to ward 44 to be under Dr Jafferbhoy's care, where we met another fantastic staff nurse, Bob. He was so kind, knowledgeable and his attitude in general was so positive. The staff in 44 are all fantastic, they are constantly on the move and yet somehow always had time for my father-in-law whatever he needed. Unfortunately he suffered a large bleed whilst in 44 and passed away, however the staff ensured he was comfortable and peaceful as he passed away. They let us stay for as long as we needed after he passed to be with him and one of the nurses working nightshift, whose name I unfortunately cannot remember, answered all of our questions and made sure we we had all we needed.
My one point about ward 44 is that communication between staff could be improved. Whilst we were at my father-in-law's bedside in his final hours a staff member came in and asked us if he wanted anything for supper, they were completely unaware that he was unconscious and hours from death. Whilst this was not their fault, and they were extremely apologetic afterwards, I feel this is a point that could be addressed to avoid any extra distress in a situation like this in future.
