A few weeks ago during the evening, my wife complained of a severe pain in the upper right side of her chest, which was making it very difficult to breathe. I called 999 and 2 paramedic teams arrived withing 5 and 15 mins. The first responder gave her O2, which greatly helped the pain and breathing. The 2nd team did more extensive tests (heart monitoring) and I told them her night time breathing for some weeks had been rapid (twice my rate) with her pulse also being quite rapid and very strong. Her body temperature was always high and she had a constant urge to scratch itchy skin and restlessness at night. She had also complained of swollen ankles for some weeks.
At A&E her blood was tested, she was chest x-rayed but nothing was found other than that her liver function was poorer than normal.
At a subsequent doctor's appointment where she told the doctor all of the symptoms I described above, he felt her throat and told her she had a hyperactive thyroid.
While I am grateful for the speed of the initial response and the care and consideration she was treated with by all concerned, I am surprised her thyroid condition was not picked up at A&E.
