I was recently admitted to hospital with urosepsis. Fortunately I made a speedy recovery. During my time in hospital I was visited by a diabetic nurse who told me stop all my insulin until my blood sugar passed 15 mmol. I was then to resume insulin slowly and suggested I would be put on a more modern insulin.
It seems the stop message has been received as written in stone by her diabetic nurse centre colleagues. My levels started to reach 16/17 at which point I unilateraly recommended insulin. The diabetic nurse at the GP practice who tried to find out which new insulin I should be on, was told I should not be taking any at all.
I am very angry that after many years of managing insulin on my own I am now being infantilised and my health is being harmed by poor communication between staff. Nowhere has a doctor been involved.
