My mum has been frail for a number of years and coped (just) at home with the support of family. She suffered from delirium every admission to hospital and those spells lasted longer each time. She had 2 failed discharges - only 5 days home wishing a 6 month period. Following her final failed discharge we were introduced to a discharge social worker in person. This was the beginning of my mums journey to a care home.
Unfortunately family differences in the understanding of the critical nature of my mums needs resulted in a rift and unpleasantness. The social worker was very helpful throughout and offered understanding and support to everyone involved. My mum wanted to go home but throughout understood that she needed more help.
The social worker encouraged multidisciplinary meetings and eventually my mum agreed to moving to a care home. Following a horrible and unexpected breakdown in what was believed to be close family my mum is safe, as comfortable as she can be with the conditions she lives with and being very well cared for.
My appreciation of the services involved in ensuring my mum would be safe and not be home alone dragging herself along the floor unable to get up,(as was the case) is so high.
It was an awful time
