"The nurses work under so much pressure"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Medical Diabetes and Endocrinology (Ward 10)

(as a relative),

My partner was recently admitted to ward 10.

We were quickly transferred up to ward 10 from casualty.

My partner was extremely unwell and I felt very frustrated that no one had taken the time to explain to us what was going on and why we were placed in the middle of a very tight male room with no privacy.

We were welcomed by nurse Katrina who I expressed my concerns to, Katrina very quickly got hospital cover to come and listen to what we as a family were worried about.

Keri arrived very quickly - it turned out out Keri is ward 10's manager and was the nurse who was on charge on this night.

Keri explained the reasons why my partner had been admitted and what the next steps were, Keri also promised us that as soon as she could she would move my partner in to a more suitable bed space and by the next afternoon she had done this.

I can't imagine how this feels being in the centre of a room with no privacy and totally exposed is just horrendous and my partner felt exposed

The nurses in ward 10 were excellent and work under so much pressure. As a family we didn't realise the strain that the hospital is under and we witnessed this with our own eyes  the ward is so understaffed but the nurses still work with smiles on their faces .

Dear Tarwd56

Thank you for taking the time to feedback regarding your partners recent admission. I am sorry to read that your partner was very unwell and no-one had taken the time to explain what was going. The lack of available beds and site pressures should have also been explained to your partner before transferring to the ward and again I offer my apologies that this did not happen.

University Hospital Hairmyres has experienced sustained pressures and long waits for patients to be admitted to the wards. It has been over capacity on a number of occasions and as a consequence of this, patients have been cared for in unconventional ward areas. This is far from ideal and not the standard we strive to deliver. However, patient safety is always a priority and therefore it is sometimes necessary for patients to be moved to a non conventional area to continue their care and create space within the Emergency department. These decisions are not taken lightly and as you have seen it is difficult for staff and of course patients and families. Again I offer my apologies to your partner, yourself and family as privacy is compromised. Please be assured that we are working exceptionally hard to prevent the use of non conventional areas being used. We are working closely with partnership colleagues to promote effective flow through the hospital and safe discharge home.

Despite this difficult time, you have kindly fed back on the care your partner received from Katrina and Keri as well as the wider ward 10 team. Your comments will be widely shared and much appreciated by staff. Thank you again for taking the time to share your feedback.

As a team we take your comments very seriously and understand the distress that this situation has caused. I hope that your partner is now recovering well and wish you both all the best.

Lise
