"Doctors are not listening to me"

About: General practices in Tayside

(as a service user),

I had an appointment with GP and I have quite a few issues that needed solving as I have an issue with doctors not listening to me and doctors not helping me with any of my issues.

I brought an advocate with me as I have said for 5 past appointments with different GPs that my pain medication isnt working and I am in a lot of pain. I’ve had chronic pain for over 10 years and I have never once been referred to a chronic pain clinic.

I am autistic so I get anxious when going to the doctor so my advocate made a big list of all the things that need sorted and a smaller list of only 3 things that needed to be sorted today. The 3 things were my acid reflux, changing my pain medication and my asthma symptoms. After a long discussion/argument, they decided to only treat the acid reflux and nothing else. They said they wanted to make sure the acid reflux wasnt causing the pain. However, i dont think the acid reflux that has developed over the last week is the cause for severe debilitating chronic joint and muscular pain I have had for 10 years.

Doctor's tone was not helpful and has said a lot of seemingly fatphobic misoginistic comments and I dont feel like they take me health seriously. They have in the past suggested my health issues are due to my weight, and suggested i exsersise. However without pain medication i cannot get to the gym to do so. I feel they are aware of this and unwilling to resolve any issues i have.

Dear Oldsoul1980

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your GP Practice and I am sorry that you are experiencing chronic pain. Feedback is very valuable to all areas of the NHS. Unfortunately, GP practices are not part of Care Opinion at this time, as each GP Practice is an independent business. So that they can see your feedback, we would recommend that you feedback your experience directly to the practice to allow this to be investigated. The Practice Manager can give you details of how to provide this feedback to them, as per their Complaints and Feedback Policy.

Kind regards
Susan Anderson
Care Opinion Administrator.
