"Oral surgery at Edinburgh Dental Institute"

About: Edinburgh Dental Institute / Oral Surgery & Medicine

(as a service user),

I waited over 2 years for surgery and then it was sprung on me. I went to an appointment that I thought was a clinic or a review and it was actually for a minor surgical procedure. I was quite shocked & upset, but having waited so long I went ahead. The staff who treated me on the day were very good, but I’m upset by the lack of prior warning / communication. I needed to cancel work and social plans because of post-surgery effects, that I could have planned around had I had notice. I’m now very anxious that the orthodontics bit of my care might slip through the cracks. Overall I left the EDI feeling a bit upset and frustrated. I love the NHS but the communication and joining up of different teams could have been much better here.

Dear zebrazq39

Thank you for your communication regarding your appointment and attendance at Edinburgh Dental Institute for Oral Surgery. I have shared your comment with the Pathway Manager in charge of the booking team as well as the Professional Lead Consultant for Oral Surgery so that they may investigate why you were not aware you were coming in for a procedure. I have also asked the professional lead to liaise with the Orthodontics team regarding the next stage of your treatment.

I apologise that you were left upset after your visit as this is not what we would have wanted to happen.

Lorraine Canning

Clinical Service Manager
