"I feel my father was let down"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Emergency department South West Acute Hospital / Emergency Care and Medicine Services South West Acute Hospital / Emergency General Surgery

(as a relative),

My father had to attend the A&E at South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen. He had stomach pain with constipation and told by to out of hours Doctor to make his way into SWAH A&E. When we spoke to the Nurse she told us that stomach pain is hard to assess in Enniskillen and we may need to go to Altnagelvin Hosptial. After hours in SWAH we were indeed told by the Doctor we would have to get our own way to Altnagelvin.

When we got there, we had to wait for hours to be seen by another Nurse and even longer to be seen by the Doctor. The Doctor told us that my father could be treated with laxatives and that my father was safe to go home.

To me, this was shocking care, and I feel my father was badly let down by the system.

Dear marskf84

so sorry to hear your father didn't have a smooth journey through our services - as this is anonymous I cant look at specific detail - Any patient with abdominal pain that presents in South west acute hospital can have their diagnostic work up in the SWAH and be seen by a staff grade Dr either in the emergency department or by attending the emergency ambulatory assessment unit. But it is a clinical decision if they need to travel to Altnagelvin to be reviewed by a consultant surgeon for senior decision making or be managed in the ambulatory pathway. While your father needed laxatives to remedy the issue it could have been several other underlaying issues that may have, needed different treatment or surgery. If you would like me to look at this further please contact me directly via switchboard in SWAH. Again I hope your father is now feeling better and I apologize for the inconvenience but the decisions were made based on safety and to get the best outcome for all patients.

We continually review the pathways to ensure they are fit for purpose

Wishing both you and your father good wishes

regards

Carol Reid
