"Disappointing Care"

About: Maternity care / Antenatal and Postnatal (Ward 38)

(as the patient),

I was disappointed with some of the maternity care I received, which I would like to highlight. I had a vaginal swab done in Triage after going in with a bleed, and I gave birth 10 days later. The swab came back showing e-coli, but I was not informed of this until I asked after birth if there was any result. I was then started on oral antibiotics for this. The following day, just before discharge, my baby had an increased respiratory rate and then needed a full sceptic screen, an x-ray, 2 failed lumbar punctures and IV antibiotics. What effects did these antibiotics have on my newborn baby's body? He also had lots of blood tests done and we had some bad experiences with that too. My thoughts are, could this traumatic time have been prevented, had my swab been followed up and had I been treated for the e-coli before delivery?

I was also only offered a bed change once in my 5 day stay on Ward 38 which I would have appreciated being done more often, due to the post birth sweats and a sicky baby, and some days I was not given water until the evening. I also had to help myself to towels every day as these were not offered.

However, I did also receive some exemplary care which I will highlight separately as these people deserve recognition.
