My elderly dad was admitted in August following a fall (head injury and bruising and low heartrate). He was attended to by paramedics and taken in by ambulance. We spent 3 nights and days over a weekend with him in an extremely busy A&E. He was given a bed late on night one whilst he was being monitored over a weekend.
From the ambulance staff to the nurses, health care assistants and doctors we were so appreciative of their care. The gentleman who served the food to dad and a cuppa for us, the busy girl who realised a blanket to help me nap during the night....all thoughtful gestures when they were under such pressure. A&E was packed to the rafters.
The biggest issue was the lack of bathroom/toilet facilities. Two loos for over 40 patients.... A&E was never meant to have patients in there for 72 hours but in light of that happening more often a washroom where someone can clean their teeth and have a basic wash would be if great benefit. Dad was subsequently moved to CCU where his excellent care continued.
The pressures in A&E are unfair to patients and staff.
"pressures seem unfair to staff and patients"
