"Exceptional care"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Neurosurgery (Ward 64 – 66)

(as a service user),

I am writing this care opinion on behalf of my brother who was an inpatient on ward 66, and our extended family.

There are not many ways we can pass on our sincere gratitude for the outstanding care given to my brother both pre-op and post-op.

It was an incredibly challenging number of months for my brother following diagnosis of a significantly sized meningioma in May'24, to complete successful resection in August 2024 under the incredible care of Mr.  St George and Mr. Mathieson and the extended medical, nursing and AHP teams.

The care, compassion and humanity shown to my brother and our family during this time left a significant mark on us and we are forever indebted to the team. I personally work in the NHS also and cannot describe the relief of leaving a loved one on a ward knowing they are experiencing the absolute gold standard of care we all wish to receive if we're unfortunate enough to be in a position to require it. The care delivered was faultless in every aspect, from communication to professionalism, my brother and our family feel very fortunate to have had the experience we have had in such circumstances.

From domestic and catering staff to consultants, everyone approached my brother and our family with such understanding and compassion and listened thoroughly to any concerns and allayed any fears. The positive attitudes  and enthusiasm of all staff were such a support to my brother, particularly in the early post-operative days and played a huge part in his recovery.

He spent a short period of time within the NRU and made remarkable progress and is continuing to do so as an outpatient, with both short and long term goals set for the next year.  He has already managed to climb Conic Hill and is setting some challenges to hopefully raise money for various charities in the coming months.

This was all made possible by the incredible care received alongside my brother's grit and determination to recovery to the best of his ability. The professionalism and passion for their roles is clear in all the staff we encountered during my brother's stay and we wish for them to know it has not gone unrecognised.

We wish to thank the medical staff : Mr Mathieson, Mr St George, Mo (speciality registrar), extended neurosurgery team and junior doctors on ward round.

The nursing team with special mention to Arlene, Esther and Paul : Lesley, Christine, Emma, Gordon, Ash, Natalia, Lynne, Rachael, Anna, Jamie, Elizabeth, Jill, Angela, Fiona, Jason, Teresa, Christina, Emma, Catriona.

The AHP team of physios, occupational therapist, SALT and support workers/assistant practitioners.

The catering and domestic staff who made sure he was incredibly well fed and taken care of.

Thank you all, you are all an absolute credit to NHS GGC and NHS Scotland.
