"Time in hospital"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Accident & Emergency Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Acute/Medical Receiving Unit (50,51,53) Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Elderly Medicine (12, 14, 18, 23, 29, 30, 32, 33,35 ,39 & 53) Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as the patient),

Had a fall in my home and was feeling unwell with delirium. After an hour phoned 999 for assistance, within 30 minute paramedics arrived, assessed me and transported me to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Once triaged I waited in the corridor of Accident and Emergency for hours. Arrived in ambulance at 12:00 midnight until 5:30 am before being moved to a cubicle and did not see a doctor until 7:00 am.

Was moved to ward 53 and was well looked after with a nurse sitting with me all the time as I was still delirious. Spent 5 days in ward 53 and was moved to ward 33 where I spent the rest of my hospital stay. The staff were all great and have no complaints on the care I was given.

I had a fall while I was in ward 33 and hurt my back which prevented me getting home I think because I was in pain.

There were 2 occasions where I was mistaken for another patient.

One was a member of staff taking a picture of my chest saying that I had a star shaped patch! They came back next day and realised it was wrong patient. Then the doctor gave me a rectal examination and agdd see in it was the wrong patient. The doctor did apologise.

The staff have been fantastic in ward 33 very kind and nothing was a bother.

Dear John148

Many thanks for taking the time to share your story here on CareOpinion.

I am sorry to hear about your fall and delerium. That must have been a scary time for you. Whilst there are some points you have raised it is always great to hear positive stories about the care provided by staff in the NHS including our own and I hope that the crew who attended to you were compassionate and friendly.

I hope that you are feeling better now and are settling back in at home.

All the very best!

Alan

Dear John148

Firstly, I am pleased to hear that that you were well looked after in Ward 53 and that the staff in Ward 33, were fantastic and kind. The staff will be pleased to know that their efforts made a difference to you during your stay.

I am very sorry to hear that you were mistaken for another patient. We take this matter very seriously and would welcome the opportunity to speak to you so that we can investigate this further. Can you please contact my colleague, Jane Lamb, who is the Lead Nurse with your personal details? Jane’s email address is: Jane.Lamb2@nhs.scot

Thank you for your valuable feedback and I hope you are recovering well at home.

Best wishes

Nicole
