"Painful catheter"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Accident and emergency Lincoln County Hospital / Urology Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust

(as the patient),

My carers had come to help me to bed when I suffered a fit, we discovered that my super pubic catheter had come out and they called the district nurses who came out but unfortunately couldn't get it back in and advised I go to A&E. They assured me I would be a priority as I'm a wheelchair user and the catheter needs to be sorted quickly. My dad took me as was quicker than calling an ambulance.

We arrived late in the evening and once again were told we would be seen as a priority, however we were sat there for hours and hours while others were being seen, I was very uncomfortable and wet as urine was now leaking out of me.

Eventually at gone 4am I was finally seen but they couldn't get the pubic catheter back in as you only have a short time period to do this, hence needed to be seen as priority.

The urology dr came eventually and had to try with a different urethra catheter and I said that will hurt and they said only for a moment, and proceeded. It was very painful, it was like they were pushing down inside of me, I do have feeling even though I'm in a wheelchair. I could see my dad trying to calm me down as sat he beside me, he could see how distressed I was, I was screaming as it was so painful, worse than child birth.

They put it in and said you can go, with no follow up advice or care given. It's left me distraught and I can't really remember much about the procedure itself as it was so painful.

District nurses came out who were lovely, they found that the wrong size catheter had been fit and that's why it was so painful and left in such a state, every time I cough or hit a bump in my electric wheelchair it makes me want to cry as its so painful.

I used to have it changed every 6 six by district nurses, they said it's too big and now I'm just left in pain. I have had a few blood clots and don’t know if this is normal or not, I don’t know anything about urethra catheter, I don't know what to do.

The next few days I felt a bit out of it and I don’t want my partner near me as I'm in so much pain. I am worried about it happening to another woman. They gave me a size 18 instead of a size 12 , I don’t know why they made this error.
