I have had 2 knee operations at Lincoln County hospital. The consultant was excellent and my stay in hospital I cannot fault (2021). However several weeks after my operation my knee filled with pus and bits of the dissolving stitches started to make their way to the surface. I was then left with a hole in my knee. I had a sinus.
Following this my knee has been permanently swollen and throwing out pus. Shortly after this a 2nd hole appeared whilst waiting to see an orthopaedic consultant.
The first consultants appointment I had at Lincoln, I cannot fault the consultant for politeness etc, except they informed me that they wouldn't do the operation needed as they weren't my original consultant. Therefore I was taken off this consultant's list, for another appointment to be made.
Several months later I had a further consultant's appointment, again at Lincoln and again with an orthopaedic consultant. By this time, my knee had had several infections, was permanently swollen and painful and had to continually be dressed fuel to the leakage of pus and blood. Again on seeing the 2nd consultant, I was told, yes it needed an operation but not to do with me. So again I had to wait whilst I was put on a list with a different surgeon, but at the same hospital and again part of the orthopaedics team.
Following this, more holes started opening up on my knee and I got a severe infection meaning I needed to stay in hospital a week. I was given iv antibiotics but no operation.
To date I have seen 4 different orthopaedic consultants and 1 appointment was cancelled as it wasn't with the right member of the team. My last appointment which was recently, with the 5th consultant, I was again told sorry but I need to see a different member of the team etc. Also when eventually someone decides to treat my knee, it will need to be operated on differently, due to there now being 10 holes that are throwing out pus and need dressing daily. My last operation being 2021 and we are now in 2024.
The staff at the hospital have all been lovely. I cannot fault them and i do not blame them. However it seems like the new way of keeping waiting lists down and within the guidelines is to move a patient from one list to another. I wonder how much longer it will take to see the correct consultant and get a much needed operation.
