I am in my 40s and an IV drug user. I have been in Victoria hospital in Kirkcaldy, ward 53, for the last 4 weeks.
To say that the care I have received has been good is an understatement. This is by far the best ward I have ever been in, and there's been a few.
I had been asked by the staff of the shift that is probably overlooked the most, the night shift. Just because we may be asleep, that doesn't mean staff get to relax. I constantly need IV antibiotics set up every few hours so staff are back and forth changing them out.
Being an IV drug user, access to my veins has been extremely difficult to say the least so a mid-line catheter had to be inserted. Unfortunately, staff have to be specially trained to deal with this and there is normally only one person who can do this. Her name is Marie-Anne and has been nothing but a pure joy to be treated by her.
In actual fact all the staff do a great job, including the wonderful Jayde, who I have a particular soft spot for who always makes sure I have an endless supply of hospital toast! For anyone who has spent time in hospital you surely know how great it is.
In truth, the night staff are the thankless who work hard behind the scenes ensuring that we all are on the right road to recovery hopefully all returning safe and well to our families. Ward 53... from the bottom of my heart I thank you!
