"Impossible to get through and get an appointment"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a service user),

I recently phoned up about pain in my foot coming back, it takes a long time to try and get through because either no one answers or the phones are always engaged, when I did managed to get through I told them about the pain coming back, but they didn't give me an appointment.

I received a letter shortly after saying that I had missed an appointment, of which I had no knowledge about, and that I would need to respond to this letter otherwise I would be discharged from the service.

This made me quite distressed because I was in quite a lot of pain with my foot.

Additionally when the information is dictated to the computer via voice to write up my letters or records, it makes no sense half of the time. It would be a jumbled sentence or even completely wrong information that then puts on my medical record.

I am responsible for monitoring overall service delivery, and the day to day running of both departments. I work closely with the Orthopaedic Consultants, Radiologists, Therapists, Trauma Nurse Practitioners, Orthopaedic Practitioners and Nursing staff to ensure cohesive care is delivered. I am very fortunate to have a dedicated team of staff, who work extremely hard to ensure patient safety is maintained, and that clinics run as smoothly as possible.

Dear delphinuspg54,

I am so very sorry to hear that you have recently experienced issues relating to the RDUH-Eastern Fracture clinic service.

As Clinical Nurse Manager for the department I would be very keen to try and identify what went wrong in this instance, and to try to address your concerns - if you would be able to contact me on either 01392 404017, or email me at julia.king5@nhs.net I would be very grateful.

Kind regards,

Julia King
