"Pain Relief after Full Knee Replacement"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Trauma and Orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Further to my previous story of feeling really unwell on the cocktail of analgesics that I was prescribed, I then developed stomach pain just under my left rib cage, I was in agony with it and spoke to my GP about the pain. I was prescribed 30mg of Lansoprazole to be taken once a day. The next day I was still in terrible pain and I was in tears when I called the surgery asking to go to hospital to try to get relief from the terrible pain. The GP put me on two 30mg of Lanzoprazole and requested an endoscopy. I managed to get a cancellation appointment in August.

The result was that I had developed 3 small ulcers in the peripyloric region. I lost half a stone in weight and the endoscopes suspected it was a result of using Ibuprofen.

I was told to go onto a bland diet, which I did and I am still taking Lanzoprazole (30mg) until the end of October 2024 and then a reduced dose of 15 mg until March 2025.

Meanwhile my Full Knee replacement was great until I think that I twisted it slightly but my knee is fine. None of this upset would have happened if the medical staff at the hospital had told me that I was on an analgesic trial and if I had been given clear instruction on the consumption of all the analgesics! I have never taken strong pain killers in my life before, so I had no previous knowledge of the harm that Ibuprofen can do to the stomach lining. In my case paracetamol four times in a day was sufficient to deal with the knee pain.
