My partner - who is in his 90s - recently went into urinary retention. Paramedics called. Catheterised and they called the UCR team. They came for 10 days. Observations every day. Took blood twice and had 2x machines to analyse the blood within half an hour. Gave advice when additional phone help required.
The infection markers were going up and kidney going down. Got him started on antibiotics. Slowly the markers reduced. District nurses removed the catheter as bleeding round the catheter. Went into retention again.
Contacted the team, who contacted A&E so we went up as a medical referral. In A&E for 8 hours and 3 catheters later we came home at 3am. The team came and blood/ urine results showed to continue 2nd week of antibiotics.
By day 10 he was stable enough to be discharged by the team. We had Advanced Practitioner nurses and physios, nurses and physios and care assistants visiting. No feeling of being rushed. Everything explained clearly.
The day after the 8 hours plus 3 catheters in A&E, we had an amazing Advanced Practitioner. So very helpful and reassuring.
The Urgent Community Response Team is the most amazing and sensible concept and we once again give massive thanks for our amazing NHS.
"So very helpful and reassuring"
