"No informed consent"

About: University Hospital Of Hartlepool / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

Had a terrible experience at Hartlepool hospital when they didn't properly explain matters to me. Multiple procedures were done without informed consent, without naming the procedures, and without any follow up information of what to do when feeling ill.

I was first told no investigation needed then later this changed and the word biopsy was mentioned.  Didn't explain matters apart from saying brief cramps and mild bleeding.  I did not know any of the multiple procedures that were performed until 3 days afterwards.

First just told they wanted to check cervix.  After multiple painful attempts of insertion of speculum, spotted a polyp, and removed polyp without warning all they said was to cough.  Kept poking me and it was agony, and I later found out it was multiple attempts of dilation of cervix and attempts at pipel biopsy which failed.

I heard muttering about problems with access of cervix then that a better option is to have a look with a camera and water, and that I might feel cramps and wetness.  This was all I was told.  Then all I know is I am having agonising pain and don't know why.  It turns out they were again trying to access cervix by dilation.  They didn't say that, but I heard them say to nurse to pass the dilator.

I felt agony and shouted that it is really painful. I was told they would do local anaesthetic, which was also agony as injected cervix without pain relief.  Some would have used numbing spray.  Continued dilation of cervix and entered the camera - again absolute agony.  I think they planned only to have a brief look but it turns out multiple biopsies were taken and it took a few attempts at it.

I kept saying how painful it is and I was finally given gas and air.  I feel faint, sick, and am in agony - I was crying and the nurse just says take painkillers when get home.

After my husband asks again for painkillers after I have got dressed they give paracetamol.  This happened on a Friday I was severely ill and bleeding heavily with a fever.  I was in severe pain and multiple painkillers didn't help.

When I saw my gp I didn't know what to say I was traumatised and explained I had procedures but didn't know what.  I then went back to the hospital when things were explained to me and when I found out I had had colposcopy, polypectomy, failed pipel biopsies and scrapes took by Hysteroscopy They apologised about the horrific experience and didn't understand why this had been done without consent.

They said they have given additional training to not make this error again.  I told the hospital this staff member must never come near me under any circumstances.
