"Lucky to be treated so well"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Fracture Clinic

(as the patient),

I had a bad reaction to my covid and flu jab, was having problems with my ear (I have a tumour) which was triggering my vertigo so I was laid on my bed when the phone rang. I tried to get up to answer it which resulted in me falling and hurting my arm. My neighbours came to help and with them being nurses they thought it best if I went to hospital. We rang the R D & E and I was given an appointment immediately.

When I got there, I was in so much pain and discomfort but I remember the kindness of everyone from the receptionist to the consultant. I was greeted warmly by the receptionist who sent me to the radiographer who had such a lovely and warm manner and she was lovely, at one point she saw I was in pain and apologised for adding to this.

I went back then to the frailty clinic to wait and see a doctor, I did not wait long and was seen by Christopher. He made me feel completely relaxed and spoke to me for a little while and explained that I needed to have my arm in a sling due to a fracture and he said he would refer me to a physiotherapist. I saw another lovely lady who said she would refer me to Heavitree Hospital for further appointments.

Every person I saw was kind, compassionate and professional. I was so impressed with everyone and the lovely manners all showed. I expected to wait a while for the appointment for Heavitree to come through but I have received my appointment letter this morning which is in two weeks time. I am so impressed to be seen so quickly. I give them all ten out of ten and feel so lucky to have been treated this way.

I am responsible for monitoring overall service delivery, and the day to day running of both departments. I work closely with the Orthopaedic Consultants, Radiologists, Therapists, Trauma Nurse Practitioners, Orthopaedic Practitioners and Nursing staff to ensure cohesive care is delivered. I am very fortunate to have a dedicated team of staff, who work extremely hard to ensure patient safety is maintained, and that clinics run as smoothly as possible.

Dear quebecwk58

My name is Liz Chapman and I am the Cluster Support Manager in Medical Imaging.

I appreciate you taking time to share your recent experience following an unfortunate fall at home. I was pleased to hear of the compassion showed to you throughout your journey. Especially the compassion shown by the radiographer to recognise you were in pain and that obtaining the x-ray may increase this discomfort.

I have shared your comments with the team and commended them on the excellent care they provided.

I hope your experience continue to remain positive and you are on the mend.

Kind Regards

Liz Chapman
