"Urgency continence and recurring uti infections"

About: Older People’s Services / Continence services

(as a service user),

I have suffered UTIs for many years and about  10 years ago I was put on a low dose of antibiotics  which was great  for a while.

A couple of months ago I was referred to a continence nurse Fionnula at Shantallow health centre  because I was suffering from urgency which caused me discomfort and distress. During my appointments with Fionnuala my issues with constipation and constant flare ups of UTI were discussed. She informed me about diet and ways to ease the constipation. I was able to talk to her freely about the awful pain of UTIs and how I was getting antibiotics off the internet because I was fed up going to the doctor especially after one sample was clear and I was in agony.

After my initial examination it was discovered that I don’t empty my bladder properly and she showed me ways to do it  The one thing that has changed my life was a medication. I still have the urgency but the meds I’m on for that are making it a bit easier.

Nurse Fionnula was very professional, courteous and most of all kind and understanding.
