"Having to travel to get my medication"

About: Borders General Hospital / Borders Macmillan Centre Borders General Hospital / Clinical haematology Borders General Practices

(as the patient),

I was first diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia in March 2007 at the old Dumfries infirmary and was on watch and wait until April 2023 when I started acalabrutinib at the BGH.

The treatment I have received over the years both at the BGH and the local health centre has been excellent. In my view the NHS is not "broken" at all. The drug that I am on is very expensive but also very effective.

However, the way this treatment is administered requires me to travel to the Borders Macmillan Centre to collect my medication rather than my local Pharmacy.

Given that my condition is stable, it would be much better if the medication were available at the pharmacy as I often have to wait over an hour and with a less than effective immune system am at risk of an infection. I also have mobility issues causing pain when walking.

I hope this insight may be helpful
