When I was diagnosed with cancer, my specialist nurse referred me to the Improving Cancer Journey at MacMillan Cancer Support. I was given my own key worker, a community connector for my area, Airdrie. At first I didn't know anything about this service, but the staff were so warm and explained everything to me. Soon my key worker called me to introduce herself and tell me more. I should add here it took me a while to remember she's not my MacMillan Nurse lol. With all the medical staff involved, I was struggling to keep track of who did what, so having my own dedicated person was a huge relief. Sharon, my worker, was amazing at helping me connect with the right people. She really made a hard time in my life feel a little less overwhelming.
One of the best things was being able to contact her directly on her mobile. She even came out to meet me at home for our first chat, which made things easier. I had actually been staying with my Mum for a few days before my surgery, and it was no problem for Sharon to come there instead when I text her at the last minute. That kind of flexibility meant a lot.
She also helped me with housing issues that were making me ill by suggesting I get letters of support, finding local counsellors contact details and when I wasn't getting any responses, she even wrote one herself and emailed it to me. That kind of dedication made such a difference. She also arranged a free gym membership for me, this has been fantastic. I'm using it now to get back in shape, but it's been good for my mental health too. I'm grateful she thought of this when I told her I wasn't ready to talk to anyone about how I was feeling. When I was struggling emotionally, she suggested the Maggie's Centre. I wanted to go, but I felt nervous, and she offered to come along with me for that first visit. That kind of support is something i'll always be grateful for.
The ICJ service also helped me with a grant that was quickly paid into my account and was a blessing. I truly can't thank this service enough.
Even though not all the issues I've faced have been resolved, Sharon is always there with another idea of what to try next, keeping me going when things get tough. There was a time I called the hub directly. Alice answered and she was great too. Just being able to reach out and actually have someone answer - it's hard to describe how much that means when you're feeling lost.
There was a time after my surgery when my emotions were all over the place. I wasn't ready for the professional emotional support I was able to get through the service, but again Sharon was there for me showing so much kindness, respect and compassion.
Thank you to Sharon, Alice, and the Improving Cancer Journey service - you've been a true lifeline during such a difficult time.
