"Made me feel like I was wasting their time"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Breast care service

(as the patient),

The consultant made me feel like I was wasting their time, and made me feel like a piece of meat whilst examining my breast.

Their lack of empathy and manners made this consultant a horrid person to encounter.

In their examination room, with the consultant sitting at their desk, on the other side of the examination bed, the nurse directed me to undress my top half and instructed me to call them when I was ready. I hadn't time to partially undress when the consultant shouted out in an irritated tone - are you ready yet?

Unfortunately, I was not and felt obliged to rush myself. The consultant didn't ask for consent to touch my breast either, they just got on with probing both my breasts and where the lump is. They acknowledged they felt the lump and again without explanation or consent drew on my breast with a ball point pen when they though the lump was, and got it wrong.

Thankfully there was nothing sinister found in my tests, however there was no explanation about what it was I have been experiencing given by the consultant in the second meeting after the mammogram and ultrasound. The consultant just asked if I was allergic to penicillin. I tried to explain that some antibiotics make me ill, just as the last batch, from my GP to treat my breast lump.  They didn't appear to be listening as there was no verbal acknowledgement or eye contact given by him. They just signed off a prescription and handed it to me. They then told me they wanted to see me in one week back at the breast clinic.

I telephoned the breast clinic a couple of days later to ask why I had to go back, to be told it's a follow-up appointment. I told the member of staff on the phone that I did not want the consultant I'd seen to examine me again. They said they would leave a note on my records.

I cancelled my appointment as I am unwell because of side effects of the two lots of antibiotics prescribed by the consultant, despite telling them that antibiotics do indeed make me unwell with side effects. I am hoping on my return visit it's not this consultant I have to see.
