"Information leaflets"

About: General Surgery / Elective Surgery (Ward 7 & 8) Perth Royal Infirmary / Pre-Assessment Clinic

(as the patient),

I had a HoLEP procedure (Holmium Enucleation of the Prostate) at Perth Royal Infirmary, Ward 7 (NHS Tayside).  I had previously read online the leaflet published by the Trust. It had not been sent to me in advance. I looked for it myself and found it. Others might not be able to do this.

When I was discharged I was given a leaflet about Pelvic Floor Exercises. In this leaflet, it was suggested that it would be a good idea to start the exercises sometime before the hospital operation. What is the point in giving advice when you leave telling you that you should have started earlier?

The publication detailed above and the information about Pelvic Floor Exercises should be sent to anyone having this procedure well in advance.  This publication should include the advice about Pelvic Floor Exercises. It doesn't currently. Ideally this should all be covered at the pre-assessment visit stage which everyone attends.

Dear Chris567

many thanks taking time to share your experience. I agree that it would have been more beneficial for you to be given the information at time of your consultation with the urology team, this allows you time to establish your exercises and opportunity to seek advice if required. Information about the surgery is essential with regards to your understanding and consenting to proceed.

Please be assured that your feedback will be discussed with the urology team and ensure that this is offered to all men in the future.

Update posted by Chris567 (the patient)

Thank you for your prompt response Allison. I have nothing but praise for the actual treatment I received whilst in PRI. I have seen the inside of many hospital wards over recent years and Ward 7 was the most efficiently run of any I have experienced. The whole procedure and the care and empathy of all members of staff, at every level, that I had contact throughout my stay was exemplary. As is often the case, the administrative procedures behind the scenes let down the patient facing staff. Your reply suggests that information about the procedure and preparation should be given at the time of the consultation with the Urology team. Yes, but I would also suggest that as it was 22 months between my consultation and eventual admission, any relevant information and documentation could perhaps be held and given out, if necessary, by the pre-assessment team? The appointment for part of the process is likely to be much closer to the treatment date.

Dear Chris567,

thank you for your kind feedback regarding your stay in ward 7- I will share this with the team.

As you have suggested, I will ensure going forward this leaflet is supplied by the pre -assessment team prior to admission so patients undergoing this procedure have the opportunity to commence their pelvic floor exercises before their surgery.
