I recently had my first midwife appointment.
The waiting area was clean and health care support worker at the station was very accommodating, fresh water was available to those waiting.
I was seen by midwife Sheena and a student midwife Tamara.
Sheena introduced herself to me and displayed a very positive attitude and body language was welcoming.
Sheena showed compassion and a great knowledge in her area of practice. The appointment throughout was very well structured, she took taken her time to ensure all information was obtained accurately. She listened to what was being said and has communicated well in a non judgmental manner. I didn’t feel that it was being rushed at any point.
Sheena obtained my consent prior to arriving in the consultation room to have a student midwife there, in addition to introducing Tamara to me upon entering the room.
Sheena involved Tamara in the appointment, providing a variety of learning opportunities for the student throughout the time I spent with them during my appointment.
Tamara, as a student midwife, was very enthusiastic and polite in her manner, she listened to both mentor and patient to assist appropriately with the appointment. She showed she has a good knowledge and asked myself appropriate questions to assist Sheena with the apportionment, she was very proactive; with obtaining vital signs, conducting urine analysis and obtaining blood sampling. She has shown throughout my appointment that she will be a great attribute to midwifery upon qualifying.
There was an issue identified during my appointment - Sheena sought help from her senior. She presented me with a person centred care plan; exploring the options and explaining potential outcomes.
She passed me on to the Maternity Day Assessment Unit to have further investigations.
I was seen by midwife Charlee, who once again was very accommodating and prompt to carry out the ordered investigations.
She made adjustments for me to move my car - as my 3 hour parking slot was coming to an end and I was unable to extend the parking. I had parked my car on a street, as there is a very limited car park spaces for patient - however it’s a historical problem that this hospital has had. However, it only becomes an issue if an appointments are taking longer then expected as it was in my case.
Upon my return Charlee made a consultant appointment for me to have a consultation with, has put me on a weekly telephone clinic list and provided me with equipment that I had to take home with me.
Everyone that I met showed care and compassion.
All three members of staff were professional and friendly, despite the pressures they may be facing.
They have made me feel involved, informed and individualised my care.
Overall, a fanatic delivery of care by all involved.
