I had a heart attack in July and as a result of this I had a stent fitted.
Several weeks later I was introduced to the cardiac team and initially explained to me what had happened, and why I had the attack. I was given great assurance about my future care.
I also had an initial fitness test. I was then given the option to join the cardiac rehab group. The group meet for a gym sessions every tuesday and thursday and a planned exercise routine is drawn up for you depending on your fitness level. I found this a great help and very rewarding. Rhona, Lillian, Sharon and Gillian offer great encouragement and support over the 12 weeks or so I was there for classes.
Some weeks there were classes on relaxation, and other group members talking of their experiences. This was informative too, sharing common concerns or mental health issues.
I also had interviews with the pharmacist. All my meds were explained to me, and some were removed or adjusted. Again I had regular meetings and updates to make sure I had no side effects. That was very reassuring.
I have just completed the rehab group alloted class. I decided I wanted to continue going to the gym on my own as I really enjoyed it. The hardest part was starting, and the weeks flew in.
The best thing is that I will be monitored by an NHS staff member for the next 12 months while I do my gym work. So I'm really pleased about that. This will be relayed back to the cardiac team too.
I was lucky, in so far that I didnt have any major issues or problems during rehab. Sharing with others in the group is an experience. Everyone has a story. And each one is unique. I accepted all the help I could get, from classes to information emails that came my way.
I'm now probably fitter than I've been in a long time and I'd like to thank all the staff involved in my recovery.
"Great encouragement and support"
