"Bowel perforation and complications"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / General surgery Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Same Day Surgical Assessment

(as the patient),

I was admitted to RCH Treliske in February of this year with suspected appendicitis. It was actually a perforated bowel, peritonitis and sepsis, which resulted in having an open Hartmann’s procedure. I received amazing care from all of the teams involved in both of my surgeries and 3-week hospital stay.

Follow-up appointments have been informative and positive. My recent colonoscopy was a breeze (ish), thanks to the fantastic team in the Endoscopy unit. Now it’s all systems go for a colostomy reversal. In all of the time since February, I have always felt supported by the staff involved in my aftercare, particularly the Stoma Team who do a sterling job of helping us ostomates get to grips with life with an ostomy. A massive thank you to everyone at Treliske, as, if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here now.

Good afternoon.

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry for the delay in response. My name is Zoe and I am writing to you on behalf of the patient experience team at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. I am sorry to read that you have been through such a difficult time with your recent diagnosis' and surgeries. I cannot begin to imagine how distressing this was for you.

I am really pleased to read that the care you did receive was satisfactory and you had the support you needed during your surgeries over your 3 week stay with us and that your follow up appointments have been positive and things were explained to you. It is really lovely to read that you've felt supported throughout the aftercare process and the Stoma Team were able to provide you some guidance.

I'm really happy the surgeries went smoothly for you and I will be delighted to pass on your wonderful feedback to the teams who assisted you.

Hope you are recovering well.
Best wishes
Zoe - Patient experience and engagement administrator
