"I left feeling quite upset"

About: Gynaecology / Gynaecology Outpatients

(as a service user),

I recently had an appointment in outpatients gynaecology at PRI & was 10 mins late for an early appointment due to numerous diversions in the city. I apologised profusely for this. The receptionist & receiving nurses were lovely & understanding, however the clinician was very abrupt & made me feel like a real inconvenience.

I had been at a previous appointment about 18months prior for similar thing, however the presentation was different & GP had insisted that I have another scan. It was clear from the clinician's attitude that they felt I was wasting their time.

The clinician had 2 students with them, they didn't ask my consent they just told me they were watching them not me & gave me no option. Considering this was a vaginal scan & very intrusive I feel consent should have been sought. I would have consented as I understand the importance of students getting experience,  but the lack of respect & dignity was not good enough from NHS Tayside.

When I asked a question, the clinician was dismissive & made me feel small stupid & an annoyance. The waiting room only had 1 other person & my appointment was much quicker than expected so I don't believe I disrupted their day.

All the other staff were lovely & respectful including their students. It's just a shame that this person gives a poor role model for person-centred care. We all have bad days & I'm sure that was the case, however another person treated like this may opt not to seek medical help in the future & it will make me think twice about asking the question when if I have further post menopausal bleeding,  so I feel its important that we are aware of the impact we can have to the individual. I actually left that clinic quite upset

Dear Redhg34

I am so very sorry to hear of your experience when attending a PMB clinic in Gynaecology Outpatients PRI. This is not what we want for our patients as we absolutely do value patient centred care. I will ensure that your feedback is discussed in the most appropriate way with the PMB clinicians. Thank you for taking the time to give your very positive feedback where you mention our reception and Nursing Staff being understanding and respectful. I would however appreciate an opportunity to discuss your concerns with you directly and if you feel this is something you could do please contact myself on the following email or telephone so we can arrange a mutually convenient convenient time.

Best wishes
