"20wks wait for results"

About: Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Endoscopy

(as the patient),

I attended IRH Endoscopy Unit to have a endoscopic procedure in July 2024 at IRH and have to say the staff were absolutely fabulous putting me at ease and doing a great job.  I had been experiencing severe upper gastric pain.

Sadly it took 20wks + 1 day for my GP to phone me saying that the pathology report was back.  The biopsies that were taken on the day of my procedure showed that I had Helicobacter Pylori and Intestinal Metaplasia. I now have to have a further scope to take further biopsies.

I was extremely sad to find this out and want to highlight that patients should not have to wait for over 20wks for results to come back.  This needs raised as it seems that labs do not have sufficient staff to cope with the amount of work they have and it's patients who are left in limbo awaiting results.

Dear Taylor172

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are pleased to hear that you found our staff at the Endoscopy Unit to be fabulous and that they were able to put you at ease during your procedure. Your kind words about their care and professionalism are greatly appreciated.

However, we are deeply sorry to learn about the significant delay you experienced in receiving your pathology report. We understand how distressing it must have been to wait over 20 weeks for your results, especially given the diagnosis of Helicobacter Pylori and Intestinal Metaplasia, and the need for further procedures. Please accept our sincere apologies and please be assured that we are committed to improving our services and reducing waiting times for our patients.

Kind Regards

Nicole

Many thanks for your reply however I would be grateful if you can tell if this is being highlighted to Management of Labs as clearly 20 week wait for results is unacceptable. Many thanks.

Dear Taylor172

I have spoken to the Clinical Services Manager responsible for Pathology, who has advised - our waiting times are longer than we would like. The reasons behind this are multifactorial, including increasing demands on our services. We are working on a range of improvements to try and reduce our waiting times.

Please accept my apologies on behalf of the service.

Kind Regards

Nicole
