"Always friendly, professional and helpful"

About: Peterhead Community Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

From the start of my pregnancy journey I could not fault Peterhead maternity unit. I have 3 children and had the same midwife for all 3 and she was so lovely! She was always friendly, professional and always helped with any queries or worries I had.

My first child was born in another hospital and I didn’t have the best experience so chose to have my other 2 in Peterhead. Thankfully I had straight forward pregnancies with no issue so was lucky enough to give birth there. Compared to my previous experience the Peterhead maternity unit was so relaxed, easy going, peaceful and I didn’t just feel like a number. They followed my pregnancy plan and everything I wanted to happen was followed through.

For example I had in my plan I didn’t want any pain relief until it was really needed due to an issue during my first birth and nothing was forced onto me, it was given when I asked (2nd birth) or they felt I needed it (3rd birth). During my 3rd child’s birth this year she came quite quickly after arriving at the hospital and they were so professional and everything was so well organised.

I had very bad leg contractions which I didn’t have with my other births so I was in a lot of pain. I didn’t want to be on my back giving birth and due to the quick birth and leg pain my daughter was born on the floor. This was no issue for the staff and they got everything in place even though things were going quickly. The midwife I had didn’t have time to call for another midwife to come through but we had a student there and she was amazing! She was down on the floor helping, basically holding me up during contractions and nothing fazed her. She could have passed for a fully trained midwife.

I was fortunate enough to not need any stitches or have any issues after giving birth so I was able to relax while my husband and the staff saw to our baby. After giving birth and all mine and babies checks were done we were given drinks and toast and after they checked we were fine and that we had everything we needed we were left in peace in our room. It was so lovely to know we didn’t have to move rooms and weren’t rushed to leave.

I did leave the same day as I prefer being at home but was told I was more than welcome to stay the night. To top off our birth and short stay the maternity support worker was so lovely. She came in not long before we left to check we were ok, fed and changed our baby girl and sat with us in the room just chatting. It was so lovely and friendly.

The staff helped us pack up, took photos of us when we asked and were amazing all round. Even the receptionist was so nice and friendly any time I was in. I was back to the maternity since giving birth and staff that were there remembered who we were, asked how we were getting on and how we were and spoke to us like we were old friends. For anyone who is able to I would highly recommend Peterhead maternity unit.

Hi RRR9214,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this very detailed feedback! It is really appreciated!

I know the midwives here love caring for the same family during different pregnancies. The relationships that are built are so trusting, and its great to see you felt at ease discussing any worries you had.

I'm really pleased to hear the midwives respected and followed your birth plan and wishes surrounding pain relief during labour, and you didn't just feel like a number. I'm also glad you felt the unit was relaxed, easy going and peaceful. We strive to make PCMU a welcoming environment to get the oxytocin flowing.

Our team wouldn't be the same without our wonderful support staff, so they will be delighted they were mentioned!

Thank you once again and I wish you a lovely Christmas and New Year with your 2 older children and new addition.

Chloe
