"Let down by mental health services"

About: Mental Health / Community Mental Health NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service)

(as the patient),

This year has been a massive struggle with mental health. I am both passively and actively suicidal and have poured my heart out to mental health services multiple times.

I have called 111 five times this year and I have received no help from them.

I have spoken to countless crisis nurses, occupational therapists, and the mental health practitioner about my situation and how I feel. I have even been to A&E at the insistence of my doctor but they sent me away.

I have asked for support for whatever avenue I can but I am told I don’t qualify or that I don’t engage enough but if I do engage then suddenly I am functional and capable. There is no winning. I feel like I am better off dead, which I have also told them and been met with indifference.

From what you describe, I would urge you to seek support for your current mental health needs via your GP Practice.

Dear izarct36

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion. I read what you have written with concern and I am very sorry that you have had this experience when contacting the 111 service.

I would like the opportunity to explore your contact with NHS 24 further. If you would be kind enough to contact our Patient Experience Team to provide some additional detail about these calls, we could look into this for you. You can contact me or a member of our Patient Experience Team at Patient.Experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk.

In the meantime should you need to seek support or advice for your mental health. I would urge you to continue using our services, or to contact your local mental health services or GP.

Please see details below of organisations that may also be of benefit:

Breathing Space: 0800 83 85 87 (Open 6pm to 2am, weekdays and 24 hours at the weekend).
