I needed to have a bladder stone removed from the neck of the bladder, before I can start radiotherapy next month for prostate cancer. The procedure itself was a success, however, when back on the ward I needed to pass urine before I could go home. It was like trying to pass boiling water, it hurt that much. I guess my mind and body just decided it wasn't doing that again and I went into urine retention. Couldn't pass a drop. I had to have a catheter fitted. That was even more painful than trying to pass urine. I guess my urethra was already sore. The nurse was being overseen by a doctor, and she injected some lubricant and then inserted the catheter. I was in a lot of discomfort and pain during this procedure.
However, I asked the nurse how many times she'd inserted catheters, she replied, you're my first. So I did give her much praise because it could have put her off and maybe handed over to the doctor to complete. To continue how she did, under the doctors watchful eye, knowing I was biting my knuckles and clearly in pain, was commendable. Her name was Juby.
All the staff involved with my procedure were great. Ward staff and surgical team of Grantham Hospital.
