I went in to see Pia and April, who carried out a manometer test, involving inserting a long naso-gastric sensor up my nose, down my oesophagus and into my stomach, to test pressure changes as I swallowed. They then had to insert another sensor (via the same route), to be left in for 24 hours, checking the pH at the base of the oesophagus - unfortunately you have to carry around a recorder for 24 hours and sleep (or try to sleep) with it all in. As you can imagine, this is both a scary process, and, potentially a very uncomfortable one.
Luckily, Pia and April (and Alice, I think, who came to advise them) are both extremely professional, calm, considerate and empathic, as well as a lot of fun, as humans, so this is one of those very rare hospital occasions where I can actually say that I was sorry to leave! I strongly recommend them as a team, and wish them the very best in difficult times for the NHS.
