Ten years ago my mum developed a brain abscess. During that time she had several craniotomies and was close to death several times. I witnessed all sorts of awful things like her being resuscitated when I was with my aunt. However 9 months later she died two weeks after getting home. A few years later during the pandemic I had no job so I decided to work in healthcare. I worked mostly in care homes so I experienced a lot of horrendous situations. This seemed to intermingle with my mum and it turned into PTSD. Old people would trigger crippling flashbacks if they were on the TV or on the bus - old people are everywhere so I was triggered a lot.
I also had terrible anxiety as well as almost constant nightmares about my mum and care homes - I would wake up sweating and crying with my hands cramping as I must've been clenching them all night. I also had intrusive thoughts and memories. Then I had to get up and go to work. I was exhausted and highly distressed.
I knew I had PTSD but I didn't seek help until I fell apart. The mental health nurse at my GP practice suggested EMDR Therapy. I started it last year and it has changed my life. My psychologist, Dr Gooding, was excellent in so many ways. I felt she really understood me and guided me gently through the process. Since completing EMDR Therapy, the nightmares have stopped, I don't get terrible flashbacks and anxiety/crying fits etc anymore.
I would highly recommend EMDR Therapy for anyone suffering from any kind of PTSD.
