I would like to write about my experience recently at Ninewells hospital. The reason I would like to write this is not to give any sort of review of my care but to reassure anyone going for an appointment who suffers from the same nerves as I do.
I have MS and have had it for a great many years. It flares up and ebbs like a tide, but what continues is the emotional lack of control leaving me really nervous about meeting a new consultant and being unable to explain my self. I also am married to my hero, who has Lewy body dementia with Parkinson's, and sadly the doctor just told me they think he has liver cancer the day before my appointment, and this all adds to a volcano of stress.
Getting to the point, if you have an appointment with the same gentleman as I did, you will have no reason to feel nervous. Mr Gilbertson not only treated me with respect from the minute we shook hands but also helped me explain my issues without judging me for blabbering with nerves. I managed to get out at least 70% of the issues I have with my MS, and to be honest, that is 40% more than I have in the past. I swallowed a propranolol prior to going in, but this never works; I believe it was Mr. Gilbertson's skill and bedside manner, so to speak, that helped. I won't try to avoid my appointment the next time it comes round.
Many thanks.
