"Experience in paediatric A&E"

About: East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust / Emergency ambulance Lincoln County Hospital / Accident and emergency Lincoln County Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

Unfortunately, I'd like to give a negative infinity rating if possible—zero stars, but that's not an option, about the terrible experience we had.

My child started having severe headaches for a few months which had worsened. Not only does my child have severe headaches, but also started vomiting, is apathetic, can't eat, and has intense head pain. Additionally, my child had chills and a very high pulse of 161 and high blood pressure, which is unusual for an eleven-year-old. My child felt unwell for the last 48 hours, so I called 111.

The assessment by the operator led to an ambulance being sent within seven minutes, which was impressive. The paramedics assessed my child, noting elevated vitals, significant pain, paleness, and a fever that wasn't subsiding. They decided it was necessary to go to the hospital for further investigation.

We arrived at A&E around 5:00 PM. Triage was quick, and a paediatrician eventually came to see my child. The doctor had zero empathy. They had no facial expression, didn't greet us, and asked why we were there. There was no communication or patient care skills.

I explained the situation, but the doctor didn't even read the ambulance notes . They said everything seemed normal, advising to continue paracetamol for seven days until the fever subsided, and that headaches were normal. Shockingly, they explained to my child, who has complex disabilities, that a CT scan could cause her cancer. This frightened my child, who began to cry.

The doctor said to return to the GP the next day for more tests. No proper examination was done at the hospital—not even a blood pressure check. They only noted the high pulse and normal oxygen levels, and dismissed us, saying the headaches were normal, sending us home without any further action.

I was the next morning at the GP which, following the consultation of my child, decided that it is an emergency to start an antibiotic treatment and return to the hospital for investigations again, we told our experience and the GP was shocked.

We must supervise her for 24 hours and if the temperature continues to be 39 degrees and its apathetic condition remains the same to return to the hospital. Who's trusting to come back? Is there someone who will not explain to a child that will make  brain cancer if a scan is made? I found this very unprofessional.

Hi Gina474

I’m so sorry you and your child had to go through such a frightening and frustrating experience. It must have been heartbreaking to see your child in pain and not be taken seriously by the doctor. I can only imagine how helpless and angry you must have felt. You did absolutely the right thing by seeking further help,

I have shared your story with the A&E senior management team at Lincoln County Hospital and they would like to investigate their care and treatment so ask if you could please contact our complaints team via ulth.complaintsulh@nhs.net

Regards

Sharon

Hi Gina474

Thank you for sharing your experience with East Midlands Ambulance Service. I was sorry to hear about your child's illness but glad that the ambulance crew arrived so quickly to assist you.

If you are able to, we would appreciate you sharing your comments with our Patient Experience team. Please provide as much detail as you can (e.g. date, time and location), so that they might identify the control team and crew who cared for your child and share your words with them. You may contact them by completing a compliments form at Patient experience: East Midlands Ambulance Service or by leaving a message with the details on our voicemail line 0333 012 4216 (please note this is not a “live line”).

Kind regards, Claire
