"Lack of judgement and care"

About: St Margaret's Hospital / Community Care and Treatment Service (CCATS) - South Locality

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed with having Lipodermatosclerosis by Dermatology at Ninewells Hospital Dundee and referred to their outpatient specialist vascular clinic for regular appointments of wound care supported by ultrasound scans and ultrasound-guided foam injections. I was eventually referred back to Dermatology where it was decided that I would benefit from triple compression therapy supported by twice weekly appointments at my local CCATS wound care clinic in Auchterarder.

Until a few months ago things seemed to be positively progressing whereby the wound on the outside of my ankle had healed and the wound on the inside of my ankle was rapidly closing. However, during one routine appointment the nurse declared that the wound on the inside of my ankle was healed and no dressings or anything else would be necessary, just the application of a cushioned adhesive pad to protect the healed area and the triple compression re-applied. At my next appointment one week later and with a different nurse, they commented that the wound was very wet and this was attributable to the wrong dressing causing excess moisture.

Since then, the healing process has has somewhat reversed itself resulting in wound enlargement accompanied by increased discomfort and pain. It is disconcerting to experience a lack of judgement and care which has caused me harm but has also undermined all the good efforts of the rest of the CCATS team.

Dear Fester Boil,

Please accept my thanks for taking the time to provide feedback and I am sorry to hear the experience has not met the expectations of our usual standard of care. I will endeavour to investigate your concerns further and discuss with the nursing team involved.

If you are still attending the wound clinic I would invite you to make arrangements to meet with me privately so I can update you on my findings and actions taken from your feedback. My details will be available from the wound clinic nurses. Your story will also be shared with the wider team as a learning experience.

Thanks again,

Senior Charge Nurse Sharon Sime
