"Well organised and warm reception from all staff"

About: Breast services / Breast Screening

(as a service user),

I accompanied my 15 year old daughter to Altnagelvin Area Hospital recently, approximately 4 weeks after discovering a breast lump. We were promptly seen and referred by Western Rural Healthcare GP for assessment, and received an invite letter by post within a week to attend.

From arrival in the breast clinic in Altnagelvin we encountered a well organised and warm reception from all staff. The clinical areas were clean and comfortable. We were shown to a changing bay, followed by clinical assessment with a specialist nurse, Frances, who respectfully and skilfully carried out the initial examination and reviewed the clinical history, she put both myself and my daughter at ease and explained the further checks to be carried out.

We then saw a radiologist who carried out an ultrasound scan, who had his findings verified by a Consultant radiologist, both these practitioners demonstrated exceptional clinical operational and communication skills, and during this period in the scanning room we were accompanied by a nurse who offered reassurance.

We waited a short time before returning to Frances for review, and a final opinion on management was discussed with Consultant Breast Surgeon Dr Diggin, who demonstrated a supreme level of kindness, and empathy in explaining my daughter’s diagnosis, and shared decision making steps for the future.

Mum of teenager,

Thankyou so much for your feedback. We feel it is very important that our patients feel comfortable and are put at ease while using our services. It can be particularly daunting for a young teenager, our staff try to be professional and friendly and our nurse practitioner (Fiona) is excellent. I'm glad that you and your daughter had a good experience at the clinic we appreciate your feedback and wish you and your daughter well.

Hi mum of teenager,

Thank you for taking the time to give such useful feedback, patients coming to these clinics can find the experience somewhat daunting and it is probably even more so for a teenage girl. I think it may have been Fiona that you saw as one of our two trained Nurse practitioners in the service and so I have passed this beautiful compliment to her as well.

I will pass the commendation to Mr Diggin also.

Hopefully the experience you have recounted, will go some way to reassure any other young persons who might be invited to attend the clinic with symptoms in the future.

Best Wishes

Marietta Connor

Sincere apologies, I must have got the nurse practitioner's name wrong - her second name was Rankin I'm almost sure. Apologies and thanks again to all.
